Terms of service

These are the terms for using MapCrafter. They are written to be read rather than to be survived, and the parts that matter most are the two in the middle: your content stays yours, and map data attribution is a licence condition rather than a courtesy.

The agreement

By using MapCrafter you agree to these terms. If you do not agree with them, do not use the service.

You need to be old enough to enter a contract where you live. If you are using MapCrafter for an organisation, you are confirming you may accept these terms on its behalf.

What the service is

MapCrafter turns data you supply into a map and lets you style, export and share it. Importing and parsing happens in your browser, which is why it is fast and why your files are not uploaded — see the privacy policy.

Basemap tiles come from OpenFreeMap and the underlying data is OpenStreetMap. Those are third-party services with their own availability and their own terms; we do not control them and cannot promise they will never change.

Your content stays yours

You keep every right you had in the data you import and the maps you make. We claim no ownership over either.

You grant us the narrow permission needed to run the service: to store a map you save, to serve a map you publish to whoever opens its link, and to make backups. Contact us to request removal of a saved map or account; the current interface does not include self-service deletion controls.

You are responsible for having the right to use the data you import. If you upload something you should not have, that is on you, not on us.

Map data attribution is required

The basemap data is © OpenStreetMap contributors, available under the Open Database Licence. That licence requires attribution wherever the data appears. It applies to exported images and embeds, not just to the live map.

OpenStreetMap attribution is added to every map and every export automatically. It is not something you have to remember, and it is not something the paid plans remove — no plan removes it, because it is a licence condition rather than a product feature.

Any MapCrafter product credit is separate from the attribution required by your data sources. No subscription removes third-party licence obligations. If you build a derived database from OpenStreetMap data, consult its licence for the conditions that apply to that use.

Acceptable use

Do not use MapCrafter to:

  • Break the law, or help anyone else break it.
  • Publish data you do not have the right to publish, including personal data about people who have not agreed to it.
  • Attack the service, scrape it at volume, or resell it as your own without an agreement.
  • Impersonate someone else, or misrepresent where a map or its data came from.
  • Publish content designed to harass, or that is unlawful in the jurisdiction where it is served.

We may remove content or suspend an account that breaks these rules. Where it is reasonable to do so, we will say why.

Current access

The current editor is free to use. Paid subscriptions are planned. If optional plans become available, the pricing page and hosted checkout display the product, price, currency and renewal terms before payment. The pricing page lists current features and limits.

Optional subscriptions automatically renew for their displayed billing period until renewal is canceled. You can manage billing and cancel renewal from your account; cancellation does not itself refund prior payments. Refund requests can be sent to the contact listed below and are subject to applicable law and the payment provider’s purchase terms. Tax, if applicable, is disclosed at checkout.

Saving or publishing uploads a map document and its included feature data. Anyone with a published link can view that data. Export your work before closing the editor; unsaved changes are not automatically restored.

Availability and changes

We aim to keep MapCrafter available and are honest that we cannot promise it always will be. Features may change, and one may occasionally be withdrawn.

What we do not promise

Maps are representations, and MapCrafter does not verify your data. If a coordinate is in the wrong place, the map will show it in the wrong place accurately. Imported data is checked for the mistakes that are detectable — coordinates out of range, rows that could not be read, geometry that failed to parse — and those checks are reported rather than silently applied.

Geocoding results are estimates from a third-party service. Binned and aggregated maps summarise your data and therefore lose detail by design.

The service is provided as is, without warranties beyond those the law does not allow us to exclude.

Limits of liability

To the extent the law allows, our total liability arising from your use of MapCrafter is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim, or 100 US dollars. We are not liable for indirect or consequential losses, or for lost profits or lost data where you could have exported it.

Nothing here limits liability that cannot lawfully be limited.

Changes and contact

The revision date appears at the top of this page. Continuing to use the service after updated terms take effect means you accept the new terms.
